There are a lot of good fights to watch on Saturday night and you might find yourself in a quandary on whether to go with HBO or Showtime. Well lucky for you, usethejab is here to break down every matchup with this week’s preview.
First let’s breakdown the main events, HBO has Dawson vs Stevenson. This is going to be a tit for tat boxing match, if you are a fan of pure or amateur-style boxing then this is the fight for you, as these two are jab artists and if you know how Chad Dawson fights then you pretty much get the jist of how this fight will look like.... BORING! Next we have Marcos Maidana vs Josesito Lopez on Showtime. This sounds like a great fight in theory but honestly I think these two have been way overblown, one got his fame by breaking Ortiz’s jaw and the other is an underachiever who simply relies on the one punch knockout. But the good thing about this fight is that it can go either way and both fighters like to bang it out so this one gets my vote.
Let’s move on to the undercards, HBO will be airing Gamboa vs Perez. Now this one looks interesting, Gamboa has been down before but he has never been truly tested and although Darley Perez is a virtual unknown, he has the pop to end the night early, putting a damper on Gamboa’s impeccable record, so long as he does not play into Gamboa’s hands. That being said, Angulo vs Lara is going to be the fight to watch this weekend, any hardcore boxing fan knows that this is the ultimate boxing match, Mexican Raging Bull vs Cuban Matador. Why this isn’t the main event? I have no clue, but in my opinion Alfredo Angulo is one of the most underrated boxers and has been underutilized, under-promoted and is being taken for granted by Golden Boy, he is easily the most exciting man in all of boxing and if they’re not careful they might lose him tomorrow night if he is embarrassed by Erislandy Lara, which is a huge possibility because Erislandy is the best pure boxer in the light middleweight division and can outbox anyone in the game, and I mean anyone. These two are the most feared in boxing, making this a very intriguing matchup because after this fight, they will not be ignored, setting up the possibility of a Canelo fight against the winner.
Now onto my predictions, it would be very safe for me to say that if this fight makes it past the first round, Lara takes it, as we all know Angulo tends to punch himself out prematurely, but I’m going the other direction on this one and sticking with my boy “El Perro” Angulo to batter Erislandy throughout 12 rounds, sorry Erislandy, because he showed me that he can go the whole nine last time when he beat Jorge Silva by unanimous decision.
Predictions: Angulo by decision, Gamboa by decision, Maidana in 8, and Dawson by decision
